Description

IC 1459 (also catalogued as IC 5265) is an 10th magnitude elliptical galaxy 5'.2 × 3'.8 in size located in the constellation Grus and the dominant member of a galaxy group known as the IC 1459 group which is a loose group centred at IC 1459 and contains a large number of spiral galaxies.

It is located at a distance of circa 85 million light-years from Earth, which, given its apparent dimensions, means that IC 1459 is about 130,000 light-years across and  was discovered by Edward Emerson Barnard in 1892.

NGC 7418 is the very pretty magnitude 11.39 face on spiral in this image with an apparant size of +0°03'47.58" x +0°02'02.88".

This group, along with the NGC 7582 group, form the Grus cloud, a region of elevated galaxy density. The Grus cloud, along with the nearby Pavo-Indus cloud, lies between the Local Supercluster and Pavo–Indus Supercluster.

My cool winter plunged rapidly into summer over the last few nights. QSI CCD cooling went from -24C to -13C over the space of a few nights with some wobbly seeing so conditions were not ideal  but it's a new moon so I did manage two long RGB runs which helps make up for the conditions.
